Earth Day 22 #6: Go Ahead, Reuse Me
Would you believe me if I told you that the toothbrush waste in this country is equivalent to 50 million pounds of waste a year? Well it's true and it's time to do something about it. Here's a product I really love.
Preserve Toothbrushes are made from recycled materials and have been developed with dentists. The source of plastic is #5 recyclables, often not taken by curbside recycling. In New York City for example, #5's are not taken and end up in landfills. Recycline, Preserves company takes the #5's and makes them into products we can all use. They have a partnership with Stonybrook Farms to use their used yogurt cups to make the handles for these toothbrushes.
If that's not enough, their packaging is recycled (and recyclable)can be reused as a travel toothbrush holder! When you purchase one of their products you get a pre-paid postage mailer to send back your toothbrush when done so they can recycle it and make picnic tables or boardwalks (and more durable plastic products), but never fear, your old toothbrush doesn't become a new one.... ewww!
They come in a bunch of great colors and are available at supermarkets and health food stores as well as Whole Foods, Wild Oats and Trader Joe's. Visit their website and check out their other products including toothpicks, razors and tongue cleaners...www.recycline.com/products
