Huffington Post: Food & Green

I've read a lot of great articles with some thought provoking topics on Huffington Post lately. Love the site! Here are some links to check out during your free time

Organic Food: USDA Asked to Decide if Organic Means Outdoors
I don't know about you, but I'd like my animals to enjoy the outdoors, to feel the sunshine on their backs and take long lazy naps as the sun sets over them. Free-Range and Cage-Free don't necessarily mean they are doing that. Pastured is the label I look for these days. I hope the label organic can one day encompass a certain amount of outdoor time, on grass, in the sunshine.

We Stand United Against GE (Genetically Modified) Alfalfa
Personally I find genetically modified foods creepy and quite scary to the food system. What's going on can't be ignored.

A Food Manifesto For The Future - Mark Bittman (Article on NY Times but found via Huffington Post)
Bittman advocates ending subsidies from the government. Love this. We have wayyyyy too much corn and milk as it is. Stockpiled. Like a whole lot.

The Organic Elite Surrenders to Monsanto: What Now?
Oh, this article made me so sad. People, don't assume because you're buying something from a health food store, and "organic type of store" or a Whole Foods that it isn't laden with chemicals! Do your research and know what you are buying. And ew, Monsanto. bad. bad. bad.

Fact Shocker: 80% of Antibiotics in the US Given to Animals

The price of cheap meat: 80% of all US Antibiotics Given to Farm Animals. No joke. And that goes TO YOU. And while you may think these animals need these antibiotics, they don't. The way they are raised (factory farms, confinement, no fresh air etc.) causes them to have many many many illnesses/disease that would never occur in their natural habitat (or on small sustainable farms). Read this article. now.

USDA Finally Admits Link Between Antibiotic Use in Farm Animals and Human Health

I would like to file this one under 'Duh' to be honest. We stuff our farmed animals with tons upon tons of antibiotics so that they can live in the horrific conditions we force upon them and we expect there to be no link in our growing resistance to antibiotics? It's amazing to me that this article is recent news, but here's the article anyway...

Where Does Your Milk Come From? (Besides Cows)

I'm constantly on the hunt for the words GRASS FED. If I could I'd only drink dairy from grass fed cows. This as many of you may know is very hard to accomplish. Grass fed milk is the easiest of all dairy items to find, and I am lucky to find it at my local health food store less than a block away. Cheese, sour cream, yogurt etc, not so easy. Also, I'd love to know what farm made my products! Hard to do! Well, maybe not anymore...

My sister sent me this great site where you can source your milk, that is of course if you're not sure where it comes from already....

Plug in the plant code and voila!

Scour your fridge and check out this site.
